View over the River Sipra at Ujjain

This photograph was taken by George Edward Herne in 1869 and forms part of the Archaeological Survey of India Collections (India Office Series). In this view, looking across the river towards the walls of the town, a temple enclosure is seen in the centre of the print. The album caption incorrectly places Ujjain in West Berar (a carry-over from the preceding series of prints). Ujjain, one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities, is a major centre of pilgrimage and one of the four sites at which the Kumbh Mela festival is held. It lies in the western part of modern-day Madhya Pradesh.
