Photograph of the entrance to a temple of the Chandella period, Phatera.was taken by Edmund William Smith c. 1890 and is part of the Archaeological Survey of India Collections (Indian Museum Series). The picture shows the temple's elaborately carved architraves and lintel. They date from around the 9th century Pratihara period and are decorated with elaborately carved details of lotus scrolls, panels depicting Shiva and Parvati, figures of ganas framed by pilasters, amorous couples and celestial figures. On the lintel are figures of the nine planets and of the Saptamatrikas, the Seven Mothers, above the lintel, the four rows of figures show six four armed goddesses with ganas; another panel shows Garuda-Narayana in the centre flanked by gods. The third panel depicts bird-headed goddesses flanked by the Dikpalas on their mounts. At the base of the jambs are river-goddesses and door-guardians.
