View over the River Sipra at Ujjain

This photographa was taken by George Edward Herne in 1869 and forms part of the Archaeological Survey of India Collections (India Office Series). In this view, which looks across the river Sipra towards the city walls of Ujjain, a temple enclosure is seen on the left of the print. Ujjain, one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities, is a major centre of pilgrimage and one of the four sites at which the Kumbh Mela festival is held. It lies in the western part of modern-day Madhya Pradesh.
