Photograph of a Dharmashala in Bombay (Mumbai) from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections: India Office Series, taken by an unknown photographer, c. 1870. Dharmashalas were rest houses for pilgrims, built by philanthropists and maintained from endowments provided by the founders. They offered cheap accommodation for travellers and some were rigidly restricted to the use of certain classes or castes.
