Full-length seated studio portrait of a young girl of an Indian princely family

Studio portrait of a young girl from an Indian princely family by an unknown photographer, c. 1870, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collection. After British imperial rule in India was established in 1858 the numerous kingdoms or states were divided into three main divisions, amounting to 565 kingdoms in total. The states varied in size and significance; some covered thousands of square miles, others, particularly in Western India, barely covered a square mile. With Independence in 1947 the princely states merged into the republic of India and in 1971 they were de-recognised by the Republic of India.
